Fashion Insiders Guest Speaker Series Kicks Off with Keanan Duffty
British fashion designer and author to discuss how "anti-fashion" icons have influenced fashion
Author and fashion designer Keanan Duffty will be at LIM College Thursday, Sept. 22 to kick off the bi-annual “Fashion Insiders” guest speaker series.
Featuring leaders in their respective disciplines, Fashion Insiders evenings provide LIM College students with special access to some of the most fascinating figures in the fashion industry. Fashion Insiders events are held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in FashionOpolis on the first floor of LIM College’s Townhouse at 12 East 53rd Street.
This semester’s theme is “The Iconoclasts.” According to Michael Palladino, LIM College’s Director of Student Life, who coordinates the series, “Access to industry professionals is an important component of an LIM College education. This fall’s Fashion Insiders events will expose our students to five people who, each in their own unique way, have pushed the envelope and challenged convention as they’ve pursued successful careers in the fashion world.”
During his visit Duffty will discuss how anti-fashion icons such as David Bowie and the Sex Pistols have inspired fashion. His lecture is based on his 2009 book, Rebel Rebel: Anti-Style, co-written by Paul Gorman, and will include filmed interviews with the late Malcolm McLaren, Vivienne Westwood’s design partner and manager of the Sex Pistols, author Legs McNeil (“Please Kill Me” and “I Slept With Joey Ramone”) and Rufus Wainwright, as well as many iconic still images of six decades of cultural rebellion.
A member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), Duffty is known for his modern and innovative approach to fashion, which he has translated into a "rock star style" line for men and women.
Duffty graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree, First Class, in Fashion Design from Central Saint Martins College, London. After relocating to New York in 1993 he established his rock- inspired fashion collection which was sold at premium international retailers such as Barney’s, Bloomingdale's, Bergdorf Goodman, Macys, Harrods and Harvey Nichols.
In 2006 Duffty launched his "England’s Dreaming by Keanan Duffty" collection at Target in an exclusive licensing agreement with Li & Fung. He also designed a men’s collection, in collaboration with David Bowie, for Target, and has been a consultant and design collaborator with many high-profile brands including Reebok, Dr. Martens, Aveda, and Gwen Stefani’s L.A.M.B. collection.
Duffty's clothes have a following that includes rock stars such as David Bowie, Mick Jagger, and the Smashing Pumpkins, as well as entertainment world stars including Sarah Jessica Parker, Ashlee Simpson and Jimmy Fallon. Duffty also once designed a space suit for Martha Stewart. Since 2007 Duffty has been the U.S. design director for Ben Sherman tailored clothing.
His television credits include serving as host on Emmy Award-winning Plum TV’s show The Juice, where he interviewed numerous celebrities including Gore Vidal, Donna Karan, Tommy Hilfiger, Chace Crawford, and Alec Baldwin.
