Derek Cockle is an apparel industry veteran with extensive experience in product development, sourcing, and menswear and textile design. He has been at LIM College since 2003 and teaches several courses, including Applied Concepts in Fashion Merchandising, Textiles, Product Development, Menswear, Accessories, Fashion Magazines, and the Senior Capstone in Fashion Merchandising.

Prior to beginning his academic career, Professor Cockle was the Vice President of Sourcing and Production for Boscorale Operating LLC. He has also designed textiles and menswear for Daewoo International, Pierre Cardin, Bill Blass, and Gianfranco Ruffini and been a Menswear Designer for Philips Van Heusen. In 1996, and again in 1998, Professor Cockle received Cotton Incorporated’s Textiles Designer of the Year Award for his men’s novelty woven shirt fabrics.

Professor Cockle’s primary area of academic research is Native American textiles design and he was the first faculty member to participate in LIM College’s Maxwell F. Marcuse Lecture Series, giving a presentation on “Cultural Diffusion and the Navajo Weavers.” He has also presented papers at Pop Culture Association / American Culture Association conferences. 

Professor Cockle was a key figure in LIM College's participation in the Kakehashi Project, which aims to help U.S. students create and nurture an interest in international relations while advocating the strengths and charms of Japan. In June 2014 he accompanied LIM College Fashion Merchandising majors and the Fashion Merchandising Chair to Japan for a 10-day study tour. 

Professor Cockle received LIM College's Award for Teaching Excellence in 2013. The recipient of a Master of Arts degree in Textile Design from The Royal College of Art in London, England, Professor Cockle also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Textile Design from England’s Birmingham College of Art & Design. In his spare time, he enjoys travel, music, cooking and reading.
