Dress Up Day - Cultural Connections to Fashion Spring 2010
Students in Professor Amanda Hallay’s Cultural Connections to Fashion class wear outfits inspired by the eras studied in class. See the outfits and the eras that inspired them side by side in this photo gallery.

Lindsay took us back to the Glam Rock days of the Early 1970s with her David Bowie lightening strike and mesh jumpsuit borrowed from her mom, who wore it "back in the day" and held onto it as a perfect reflection of Glam Rock style.

-
One of Alison’s favorite eras covered in class was The Great Depression, so it was no surprise to find that she addressed the Dustbowl-inspired dress which reminded her of the FSA photographs of Dorothea Lang.
-
Simple cloth dresses were typical of the Great Depression.
-
The ‘80s channeled the ‘40s, and Jen channeled them both in a dress borrowed from her grandmother, who wore it to Jen’s christening.
-
The TV show "Dynasty" had a huge influence on 1980s fashion, makeup, and hair styling.
-
The hippy of the Late 1960s lives on, with several students opting for the waistcoats, peasant blouses, ethnic jewelry, hipsters and sandals favored in The Summer of Love.

The ‘80s are Fallon’s favorite decade; she borrows a little from this decade all the time, but for ‘dress up day’, she piled on the bling in honor of ‘80s hip hop stars such as Run DMC, and topped it all off with a spectacular “fauxhawk.”

With her denim hot-pants, lacy tee, knee-high boots and long, tussled hair, Jenna harnessed the iconic look of Brigitte Bardot…and made us all wish we were in St Tropez!

Kristina "Rocked Around the Clock" with her ‘50s turn-up jeans, flat pumps, and girlish blouse.
-
Rolled up jeans, flat shoes, and simple blouses were the popular, school girl looks of the 1950s.
-
With her loose, floral dress, Doc Marten style boots and messy top knot, Lisette was authentically Early ‘90s

Everyone in Cultural Connections learned that black and white stripes, when coupled with a tailored, Early ‘60s cut, instantly shout “FELLINI!”
-
Stacey certainly did when she chose her outfit inspired by the work of the Italian film director.
-
Olivia had planned a fabulous outfit for dress up day, but had woken up feeling under the weather and didn’t want her photo taken because, as she put it, she “hadn’t made a cultural connection." But Prof. Hallay saw something else. See next photo caption.
-
Riding jeans, boots, T-shirt and men’s jacket are the quintessence of “rock-star-in-the-daytime” chic, channeling Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Patti Smith in a seemingly effortless combo the signifier of “morning after” cool.
