The respect and trust with which her colleagues treated each other ensured that their department worked effectively and efficiently -- a great example that Erica will carry forward in her own career.

Fashion Merchandising major James Totten did his Senior Co-op at Balenciaga as a wholesale intern. With a background as a personal shopping assistant at Barneys New York, this position was the right fit for James.

He performed a variety of tasks, including acting as the liaison with the company’s production facilities in Europe. His favorite part of his internship was working with models and buyers during market week. He took model measurements, dressed them, and ran clothing from the changing room to the showroom floor. James also worked closely with the retail director on various projects, including helping with a trunk show at the Carlyle Hotel. Another important part of James’s hands-on education was learning how to sell to buyers.

Although James’s specific career plans are still uncertain, he is committed to a career in the fashion industry. There are many things he still wants to learn and experience. Yet he does know that he will utilize the experiences from his Senior Co-op at Balenciaga in any future job he takes on.

At Saturday Night Live (SNL), there are a host of departments that function behind the scenes to produce a seamless show. One of those departments is Costumes and Wardrobe.  As a Fashion Merchandising major with a concentration in Styling, this was a fantastic place for Jessie Morgenstern to complete her Senior Co-op internship. Jessie got this great opportunity after meeting SNL’s head costume designer at an LIM College event.

The Costumes and Wardrobe team is responsible for selecting all of the costumes on every SNL episode.  From everyday people, to outlandish depictions of political figures, well-known celebrities, and even inanimate objects; Costumes and Wardrobe is responsible for outfitting each member of the cast, in addition to dressing the show’s weekly host for each sketch, digital short, commercial parody and broadcast.

Jessie became part of a tight-knit group consisting of five costume designers. As the department intern, she helped out everyone on the team and learned the ins and outs of all of their jobs. Nice experience for an aspiring stylist!

While an intern with Macy’s Merchandising Group (MMG), Ryan Stiber was launched into an exciting atmosphere where enthusiasm and hands-on participation were a must. Working with Visual Managers, Retail Development and Merchant Teams, Ryan was given the opportunity to create visual imagery for communications that depicted MMG private brand in-store environments. He also crafted directives for stores to utilize when making brand-appropriate statements.

Along with researching competitive brands, merchandising trends and industry technologies, the Visual Merchandising major from Reading, Pennsylvania, had a unique chance to create conceptual imagery that portrayed future buys, prospective fixtures and visual elements for MMG. Ryan says the experience at MMG fits into his goal of working as a Hospitality Designer in New York or Los Angeles. He says his LIM College career and MMG internship prepared him for designing alluring environments where people can come together, appreciate his work and say, “That’s definitely a Ryan Stiber design.”

    Volunteer Opportunity

Volunteering behind the scenes at New York’s Fashion Week is an especially exciting experience for hundreds of LIM College students every year. Our students might be backstage dressing models, or in the front of the house seating celebs, buyers and journalists. Whichever duties you perform, you will be assisting New York’s fashion elite as they execute the most important events of their careers.

New York’s Fashion Week receives worldwide media coverage and can make or break designers and their labels. During Fashion Week, LIM College volunteers are indispensible to a range of high-profile companies, which have recently included Yigal Azrouel, Perry Ellis, Bumble & Bumble, and Think PR. Our Office of Career Services has been providing Fashion Week organizers with a steady supply of dedicated volunteers for years.

Your experiences at Fashion Week will be a unique and valuable part of your education and you are sure to remember these weeks for the rest of your life. LIM College students know that there is no substitute for being in the center of the action -- and volunteering at Fashion Week puts you there.
