“I love igniting students’ interest in a topic they thought they didn’t care for – and then seeing it turn into a passion!”
Amanda Hallay, Assistant Clinical Professor in Fashion Merchandising, isn’t just an LIM College professor. She’s also a published author, a trend forecaster, and a cultural historian. Her first novel, Dole, was published in 2009, and she’s currently working on two other books, Popular Culture of the 1950s and Kitsch Collectibles.
Her success as a writer makes sense when you consider that Professor Hallay was a magazine editor before arriving at LIM College. She worked as the international fashion editor at Men Mode and Couture magazines, and also worked as a European Trend Analyst for the Doneger Group. She brings this experience to her students in her classes “Fashion Magazines,” “Fashion Writing,” and “Cultural Connections to Fashion,” a class she developed specifically for LIM College.
When asked what kind of advice she’d give to students considering a career in fashion, she says “learn as much as you can about culture – both past and present. Watch movies! Read books! Go to museums and galleries! Instead of watching Gossip Girl, turn the channel and see what’s on The History Channel. You might be surprised to discover that something you see there has a direct influence on fashion right now.”
Professor Hallay says she loves getting to know her students as individuals and helping them hone their talents as writers, trend forecasters, editors and historians.
