LIM College Student Competes for $25,000 Geoffrey Beene Scholarship
Develops "Ava & Alex" brand for scholarship competition
LIM College senior Samantha Rego is one of only 28 students from colleges across the country competing for a chance to win one of four $25,000 merit scholarships provided by the Fashion Scholarship Fund (FSF) and the Geoffrey Beene Foundation.
Samantha’s quest began in the fall of 2008, when she became one of five LIM College students chosen, based on GPA, to compete for a $5,000 FSF scholarship. That competition required her to create a store concept for launch in New York City, Miami, and Chicago, as well as submit a personal essay. Upon winning the $5,000 scholarship in March 2009 (along with fellow LIM College student Kristin LaRocca), Samantha and Kristin were each asked to write a paper on what steps retailers should take during these tough economic times. After evaluation by a group of LIM College faculty members, it was decided that Samantha would go on to represent LIM College in the quest for a $25,000 Geoffrey Beene Scholarship.
To try and win this award, Samantha was asked to develop an apparel brand aimed at 18-30 year old that would be profitable and realistic in the current economy. After much research, Samantha developed “Ava & Alex.” To be sold in Macy's and targeted at young adults who have just graduated from college, Samantha positioned Ava & Alex as a fashion-forward private label with a moderate price point.
Samantha, who is a Fashion Merchandising major from Hooksett, New Hampshire, intends to pursue a career in licensing after graduating from LIM College. She says, “I’m very excited to be in this scholarship competition. It's been a wonderful opportunity and has given me the chance to apply all of the skills I've learned at LIM College.”
Later this month Samantha will find out if she is one of the eight finalists still in contention for a $25,000 scholarship. The final four winners will be announced at the FSF Geoffrey Beene National Scholarship Awards Dinner on January 10.
