Faculty Profile

Julia Kim Math, Finance & Technology Department

“Mathematics is not about just getting the correct answers. Rather, it is about understanding the thinking process, comprehending and analyzing situations mathematically.”

Professor Kim studied at the Royal Conservatory of Music School in Toronto at age 14 and came to the U.S. in 1998 to study violin at a Julliard pre-college program. She has been a concertmaster for many different orchestras, including the LISMA Youth Orchestra conducted by Manual Sosa. She also won the YWCA annual concerto competition and played in Carnegie Hall when she was a senior in high school. Currently, Professor Kim teaches violin at Teachers College of Columbia University and also plays in a professional quartet, performing at concerts, weddings and other special events.

She recently arranged a special event at the LIM College Math Center called “Math, Music to Your Ears.” It featured a workshop which taught students how to compose their own musical pieces by using mathematical concepts.

To better allow her students to understand math’s vital role in the fashion business, Professor Kim uses real-world situations in her classes whenever possible. By connecting mathematics to their everyday lives, Professor Kim promotes her pupils’ interest in math while they develop vital industry skills.
