Wondering what it's like to be in the fashion business? If you're a high school student, you don't have to wait until college to find out. Get an up-close view of some of today's hottest fashion careers by taking a Saturday class at LIM. Industry experts will take you behind the scenes to the worlds of styling, buying, fashion show production, and more - as you get a taste of what it's like to study fashion at the college level. This program is only open to sophomores, juniors and seniors.

All classes will be held on Saturdays from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm.
Learn the process and the art of the deal in fashion, entertainment and sports. Ever wonder how your favorite product shows up in a movie or TV show? Gain behind-the-scenes knowledge from a movie producer and innovator in brand integration.
Interested in styling celebrities for media, fashion events and the red carpet? Topics covered will include: borrowing samples, doing fittings, and collaborating with the hair and makeup team. (Materials fee - $35)
Learn what it takes to create a new cosmetic product. You'll hear from an industry insider, participate in a market research study, and develop your own concept for the next great beauty product. (basic knowledge of PowerPoint helpful)
Discover the world of event planning and its role in fashion. You'll learn what steps are involved in the planning and execution of a fashion industry happening and will have the opportunity to develop an actual event. Materials fee - $10
Do you love handbags and shoes? Learn about the exciting accessories business - everything from designer originals to knock-offs - and discover how accessories make the ultimate fashion statement. (Transportation fee - $10)
Trace the history of brands and branding in fashion. Learn the basics of branding strategy, brand components and how and why brands must constantly be reviewed and adjusted.
Learn how to plan, promote and create an actual fashion show. Topics covered will include: concept, music selection, stage design, merchandise selection, styling, model selection, and public relations.
Harper's Bazaar, Vogue, Essence and Elle are just a few of the titles you will learn about as industry professionals teach you how fashion magazines operate. (Materials fee - $25)
(pre-requisite: Fashion Magazines I) Create the prototype for your own fashion magazine. Develop covers, editorials, features and interviews to fit the needs of your reader. (Materials fee - $25)
Have an eye for what to wear and what NOT to wear? This class will travel to NYC's neighborhoods to uncover what's hot. Learn to spot a trend and predict what colors and styles will become popular. You'll also create a photo journal of your "detective work." (Materials fee - $40)
Do you want to design your own clothes? Learn the basics of Photoshop and Illustrator for fashion and begin creating your own designs with apparel software, (Materials fee - $10)
Find out how trends are tracked to forecast fashion. Learn to gather and analyze the information you need to stay on fashion's cutting edge.
Explore opportunities in fashion styling, from publications to live events. Learn the stylist's responsibilities and tricks of the trade. (Photography session fee $35)
Buyers travel the world as they select merchandise. Learn about this process as you analyze fashion trends and discover why people buy the clothes they do
Work hands-on with mannequins, props and display cases. Learn basic design principles and how to apply them in presenting merchandise to make a fashion statement.
Marc Jacobs, Zac Posen and Stella McCartney are a few of the hottest designers working in fashion today. Learn about past and current designers and how they've influenced the industry.
The tuition for each course is $200 plus a $25 registration fee and any applicable materials charges as indicated in the course description. Registration will be accepted up until the first day of class. Full payment must accompany registration. Full refund (minus the $25 registration fee and any applicable materials charges) will be given up until the start of classes. No refunds thereafter. LIM reserves the right to cancel classes if enrollment is insufficient, with a full refund to the student.
You can take only one course during each session of Saturday Fashion Lab. Due to high demand, it may not always be possible to register for your first choice. Be sure to choose an alternate course for each week that you register. You will receive confirmation of your course choice by email. You will be contacted if your second choice is unavailable.
Registration will be accepted up until the first day of class. Full payment must accompany your registration form. We encourage you to register online, as that will guarantee your place in the class. You may also mail in your registration form and check/money order, or register and pay in person (by check or money order only) on the first day of class. Please note that if you wait to register in person, the class(es) you wish to take may not be available.
To allow sufficient time for processing, mail-in registration forms must be postmarked by the following dates: Oct. 1 for Fall 2008, Dec. 15 for Winter 2009, and Feb. 20 for Spring 2009. Contact Jennifer Bullis at 212-752-1530 Ext. 214 to obtain a mail-in registration form.
LIM's Saturday Fashion Lab is only open to high school students who are in their sophomore, junior or senior year.
