LIM offers a variety of counseling services to students, all provided by the Counseling Office. Services are confidential, meaning that the information discussed in sessions is not revealed to anyone without the student's consent. Below is a list of services:
Individual counseling consists of weekly meetings that last 45 minutes. Students must make a commitment to attend the appointments. Most students benefit from this individualized service. Students can have short-term (meeting only a few times) or long-term counseling (meeting for the entire semester).
Behavioral therapy is a focused, short-term therapy designed to target a specific problem. Issues that respond best to behavior therapy include anxiety about public speaking, stress reduction, panic disorder, social anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. We use a structured approach combining visual imagery and relaxation techniques to deal with such issues.
If you are having a bad day, or even a bad moment, and need immediate support, you are welcome to come to the counseling office to vent, cry, and talk about what is bothering you.
Group counseling involves about five people meeting together while counseling staff serves as the group leader. The groups will meet every week for 4-6 sessions. We provide a safe, confidential environment in which group members are free to discuss their problems and concerns. Group therapy helps students meet and relate to others who are experiencing similar issues and helps students gain increased self-awareness because members give each other feedback. Students who participate in the groups must agree that all information shared in the group stays in the group.
Group members participate according to their comfort level. Many benefit from sharing their thoughts and feelings while others who are quieter benefit because they learn about themselves as others talk about their concerns.
Sometimes students need specialized services or want to see a therapist off campus. The Counseling Office has a whole list of clinicians and agencies that can help you.
Students who need help with study skills are welcome to consult with the Counseling Office. We can teach time management, give test taking tips, and teach you how to improve your memory, reading skills, and note-taking skills.
The Counseling Office has an open door policy. If their door is open, you may walk in. If staff is in a meeting, an appointment will be scheduled. During the first meeting, you and your therapist will discuss your issues and the best way to help you. If you make an appointment, you are expected to attend. If you cannot attend due to illness or an emergency, you must contact your therapist immediately. If you do not contact your therapist and reschedule within 24 hours, your appointment time may be given to another student.
Counseling services work best if you make a commitment to your own personal growth. This may require that you take risks such as actively discussing information that is difficult to talk about and being open and honest about what you've been thinking and feeling.
