Library and College Archives' Unique Fashion-Related Holdings are Showcased

On December 16, 2010 LIM College played host to approximately 100 members and friends of the New York Metropolitan Chapter of the Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NY) for the group’s annual holiday party.

LIM College’s Archivist, Lisa Ryan, is the Chair-Elect/Vice-Chair, Chair, and Past Chair for ARLIS/NY, which fosters excellence in art librarianship and the visual arts and meets several times a year at various libraries, museums and other institutions in New York City and the surrounding area. Programs provide members with introductions to new technologies, new cultural institutions and to current artistic activities.

Says Ryan, “Being involved in this organization provides a marvelous opportunity to meet fellow art library and visual art information colleagues. Our membership includes art librarians and visual resource curators from academic, museum, public, and other special libraries, as well as specialized book dealers and graduate students in library and information sciences.”

The holiday party is traditionally ARLIS/NY’s biggest event of the year. Attendees included art librarians and archivists from institutions including Christie’s, Columbia University, Sotheby’s Institute, the Frick Collection, the Museum of Modern Art, the New York Public Library, the Guggenheim Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the School of Visual Arts, the New York School of Interior Design, and Yale University.

During the event tours of the Adrian G. Marcuse Library were led by George Sanchez, LIM College’s Director of Library Services, Amy Wolfe, Technical Services/Reference Librarian, and Librarians Rachel King and Sandra Weekes. Ron Knoth, a faculty member in LIM College’s Visual Merchandising Department, also set up exhibits highlighting items from the Library’s holdings and the College Archives.

According to Ryan, “This was the first time that most of the attendees had ever visited LIM College. The party gave us a wonderful opportunity to highlight the College’s facilities and showcase the unique fashion-related holdings in the Adrian G. Marcuse Library and LIM College Archives.”
