Recipients will be recognized at star-studded gala event
The Black Retail Action Group (BRAG) has announced that five of the 30 scholarships it will award this year will be given to LIM College students.
The scholarship winners will be announced at BRAG’s 42st Annual Scholarship and Awards Dinner Gala, which will be held on October 19 at the Pier Sixty at Chelsea Piers in Manhattan. The LIM College students who will receive scholarships are Ashley Dill, Roann Bennett, Miaya Darby, Amanda Rose Baker, and Andrea Higgins. BRAG was founded in 1970 to promote the acceptance and participation of African-Americans and people of color at all levels of the retail and related industries. In 2007, a college chapter of BRAG was established at LIM College.
BRAG scholarship recipients are selected based on scholastic achievement, leadership, community service, and need. As part of this year’s application process, students also had to submit an essay on “The Business Case for Diversity in Retail and Related Industries in an Economic Downturn.”
This year’s Gala honorees are: Celebrity stylist June Ambrose; Susan Akkad, Senior VP at the Estee Lauder Companies; Thomas M. Belk, Jr., Chairman and CEO of the Belk Company; Fern Mallis, Creator of New York Fashion Week; and model and entrepreneur Beverly Johnson. The theme of the evening, which will be hosted by Tamron Hall of MSNBC, is "Breaking Barriers." The BRAG Gala typically draws hundreds of industry insiders, fashion VIP's, celebrities and retail executives.
