Visual Merchandising Students Display Their Creativity in the design:retail Student Window Challenge at Saks Fifth Avenue
Six students design window displays for the legendary store
The design:retail Student Window Challenge, a competition presented in cooperation with Saks Fifth Avenue, brought together visual merchandising students from LIM College and FIT for the second consecutive year and gave them the opportunity to showcase their talents in front of prominent retailers and design firms.
The competition took place on June 5 at the Saks Fifth Avenue store and concluded with a party and awards ceremony at SnAKS, where student participants were joined by design:retail readers and members of the retail design community.
The LIM College students who participated in the competition were: Christian Alzate, Elizabeth Berardi, Alexis Gonzalez, John Lynch, Monai McCullough and Vinessa Soluri.
The two-person teams worked independently, but gained professional insight from Saks’ visual directors, who circulated among participants to provide advice and guidance. The students did not know what the theme of the challenge was or what materials they had to work with until they arrived on the morning of the competition. Materials were donated by the event sponsors comprised of key suppliers in the retail design industry.
The windows featuring the students’ designs will be available for public viewing for approximately two weeks following the competition. The students will gain additional exposure for their work both in print and online. Photos of the challenge and final designs will be featured in design:retail magazine and online at designretailonline.com.
