Re-Purposing Used Goods for Sustainable Fashion Lines: Sept. 16

9/16/2014

a discussion with the founders of three organizations in the field

Featured speakers:
Chris Akin, co-founder of The Base Project
Diana Mao, co-founder of Nomi Network
Susan Easton, founder of From the Road

The Base Project is a socially-minded fashion products company. Chris Akin, its co-founder, has partnered with entrepreneurs from artisan cooperatives in Kunene-based tribes in Africa to design and sell hard-carved bracelets made out of plastic piping. Base Project products are sold by Nordstrom, Urban Outfitters, Toms, Holt Renfrew, Toast and Stanley Korshak. Chris will discuss the challenges and opportunities entrepreneurs face in re-purposing goods to create sustainable fashion lines.

Diana Mao co-founded the nonprofit Nomi Network as a source of economic opportunity for human trafficking survivors and at-risk women. The organization is committed to teaching women trade skills that enable them to rise out of poverty. Many Nomi Network products embody sustainability through upcycling items such as rice bags. Diana has developed a supply chain that complements the Nomi Network’s commitment to social good. She will discuss how to lay the groundwork for sustainable and ethical production in countries such as India and Cambodia.

Susan Easton is the founder of home and accessories brand From the Road. She works with local artisans in nations such as Peru, Kenya and Ecuador. From the Road seeks to preserve culture and environment by implementing traditional production techniques and sourcing sustainable materials. Susan will discuss what repurposed manufacturing really means and explain how From the Road incorporates resources such as reclaimed wood and food byproducts into their creations.

This guest speaker event will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 16 from 6-7:30 p.m. in FashionOpolis in the LIM College Townhouse. All LIM students, faculty and staff are welcome to attend.
