Important Information Regarding the Closure of LIM College Oct. 29 - Nov. 2 due to Hurricane Sandy

11/5/2012

A letter from the Executive Vice President

November 5, 2012

Dear LIM College student,

My colleagues and I sincerely hope you, your family and your friends are doing well in the wake of Hurricane Sandy’s wrath. We also wish a quick and safe recovery to those within our community who were severely impacted by the storm.

Now that LIM College is back in session, I am writing to give you an update on important deadlines that have shifted as a result of the College’s closure last week. Please take note of the new dates and deadlines. If you have any questions, you may contact the following individuals by phone or email:

   If you are a freshman:
   Lauren Bazhdari at 646-388-8414

   All other undergraduate students:
   Dr. Patricia Fitzmaurice at 646-388-401

   Graduate students
:
   Patricia Hoeltge at 646-218-4523

First, let me stress that during this week we understand some students may still not have power or access to public transportation. Students who cannot make it to the campus this week will not be penalized. Moreover, students will not be penalized for late assignments that were due either last week or this week.

Second, our closure has caused us to postpone certain events and deadlines. Please take note of the following:

  • Undergraduate registration will start on Monday morning, November 12.
  • The class meetings missed last week during our closure will be made up between December 3-7, which were originally scheduled as “reading days."
*Faculty teaching hybrid courses will have the option to make up missed classes online.
  • The deadline for payment of spring semester tuition has been pushed to December 12.
  • The student insurance waiver deadline has been pushed to November 9.
  • The new deadline for withdrawing from a course without penalty is November 16.

Again, if you have any questions about these changes or any other issue related to our closure, I encourage you to contact the individuals listed above.

Wishing you all the best,

Christopher J. Cyphers, Ph.D.
Executive Vice President

Dear LIM College Students,

I hope this letter finds you, your family and friends safe and secure after what has been a trying and stressful week. Hurricane Sandy has impacted the lives of over 10 million people up and down the Eastern seaboard, but none more so than those of us who live in New York City and Long Island, New Jersey, and portions of Connecticut. Our thoughts and good wishes are with those beginning the process of rebuilding their communities.

I am pleased to report that none of LIM College's campus facilities suffered any damage. Prior to Hurricane Sandy, we powered down our computer systems in order to preserve those systems in the event of flooding or power surges. We believe it is now safe to restore our network and related systems.

In the face of the worst natural disaster to strike the New York metropolitan region, we chose to suspend classes and close the College all this past week. The massive disruptions to the City's transit system, commuter railroads, and power grid made it necessary for us to keep the College closed after the hurricane struck on Monday.

We plan to open the College at 8 am on Monday, Nov. 5, 2012, with the understanding that members of our community are still without power or without access to public transportation. If you are an undergraduate student and find you are unable to attend class (and you have access to email), please contact Dr. Patricia Fitzmaurice, Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs; if you are a graduate student and cannot come to campus, please contact Patricia Hoeltge, Graduate Studies Director.

A plan to make up lost class time will be delivered and shared with you later next week. Also, the start of registration for the Spring semester is postponed until Monday, Nov. 12, 2012. Please understand it will take a few days for the College to get fully up to speed; your patience is greatly appreciated.

On behalf of President Marcuse and the administration, I look forward to welcoming you back to campus on Monday. Remember, LIM College has a variety of support services (personal, financial, academic) that are available to you. I strongly encourage you to avail yourself of these services, particularly during this difficult time. Please know that members of the faculty, staff, and administration are here to help you however we can. If you need help, don't hesitate to ask!

Sincerely,
Christopher J. Cyphers, Ph.D. - Executive Vice President
