Alumni Spotlight: Andrea Higgins, Class of 2013

What’s happening in your career now?

I currently work as a publicist and internship coordinator at Sunshine Sachs, a PR firm known for its work with high-profile clients in the entertainment industry and with some of the world’s top nonprofits.

What path did you take to get to this position?

Instead of going into a full-time job immediately after graduation, I decided to take a gap year. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to pursue a career in public relations because my internship had been stressful.

I traveled around the U.S. and volunteered in Italy as an English teacher for a few months. While I was in Italy, I applied and was accepted to the International Communications Master’s program at St. John’s University. While attending St. John’s, I missed working in PR, so I applied to intern at Sunshine Sachs. After spending my last year of grad school interning with the company, I was offered a full-time position.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career in PR?

Be nice to everyone that you meet. You never know when you’ll cross paths with them again, so be kind no matter what.

You don’t have to sacrifice your entire life to be successful in this field. There are the inevitable long-hour days in PR, but the point of having a team is so that you don’t have to make it habit to work all day every day. Also, you tend to be happier and more successful when you have work-life balance.
