January 27, 2017
Jenna Davis (’14) owns That Little Black Dress, a popular boutique in Montclair, NJ. As owner, her responsibilities encompass every area of the business, from buying, styling and visual merchandising down to maintaining the store’s website and social media presence and handling the accounting paperwork.
Jenna’s hard work has paid off. That Little Black Dress has made numerous local “best of” lists, including Montclair’s Best Shopping/Retail (2015) and New Jersey’s Favorite Boutique (2015), and the shop was named as a Gold winner for the Best of Essex County (2016). She’s also attracted local media coverage, including features in The Montclarion, Cliché Magazine, and Baristanet.
When asked how her LIM education helped prepare her for her career as a small business owner, Jenna says, “LIM College helped educate me for my career in every way possible. From buying classes to marketing classes, I’m able to apply all of that knowledge to my business. The internships and field trips also gave me firsthand knowledge about what it was like to work in the industry.”
She continues, “Some of the challenges I faced in my first year in business were budgeting for overhead and merchandise while trying to market my business and get my name and location known. With my knowledge from LIM, I was able to manage these challenges successfully.”
Adds Jenna, “They say if you love what you do you’ll never work a day in your life. And from my experience opening my boutique, this is true.”
