Alumni Entrepreneur: Laura Parker (MPS '15)
May 15, 2018
After earning her Master of Professional Studies degree from LIM College, Laura helped build a socially-conscious startup that helps fund young women's education by producing and selling designs by high school and college students. Her LIM education prepared her to understand corporate social responsibility and the mindset of the next fashion-focused generation.
What’s happening in your career now?
I’m the Chief Operating Officer at My Social Canvas, a social-impact fashion company that empowers young women and girls. We hold contests for student designers, in collaboration with influential fashion brands, and give students access to educational scholarships and mentoring opportunities. I was the company’s first employee.
How did LIM help prepare you for this role?
LIM gave me the basis I needed to understand local and global markets. My favorite class was Cause Marketing, which taught me how companies develop and maintain socially-conscious business models.
What is the most important part of starting a new business?
It’s important to be visionary, but you also need to know how to execute tasks that will get your company where you want it to be. Many entrepreneurs bite off more than they can chew in the beginning, which leads to overpromising and underdelivering.
What do you envision for the future of My Social Canvas?
We will continue using fashion as a platform to empower young women! We won’t just be known for exceptional products with beautiful student designs, but also for enabling women and girls to create lives and careers they love.
