Alumni Spotlight: Nezjma Smith, MPS ’17
April 25, 2019
Nezjma, who is originally from Lynchburg, VA, came to LIM College for her master’s degree after attending North Carolina Central University. She received a Master of Professional Studies degree in Fashion Merchandising & Retail Management in 2017. She’s now a Merchandise Assistant for Family Dollar Stores.
How did your LIM College education help prepare you for what you’re doing now?
LIM exposed me to every aspect of fashion merchandising and retail. It also helped me develop Excel skills, which are critical in the corporate world.
What were your professors like?
I loved that my LIM professors had real experience in the fashion world. They were able to give advice and assign projects that directly related to what we would be doing in the workplace. They also had amazing connections with fashion professionals who would come and speak in classes.
What internships did you do while you were an LIM student?
I had the opportunity to intern at ITOCHU Vince Camuto Mens. This was my first taste of corporate life, and I enjoyed every second of it—from creating a mock store inside the office for buyers to shop new products, to creating outfits for a professional tennis team to wear to a red carpet event.
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
I am so proud that I never gave up. While obtaining my master’s degree I had a baby at 24 weeks and then I had knee surgery three weeks later. Despite everything, I pressed through and finished my degree. Although I had to walk across stage with a knee brace, sneakers, and crutches, I made it with a 3.8 GPA!
If you could give advice to your younger self, what would it be?
Don’t be afraid to take a leap of faith. You are stronger and braver than you think!
