Alumni Spotlight: Samantha Rotter, Class of 2013

What’s happening in your career now?

I am the owner and lead designer at The Perfect Moment – my own event planning company. We mostly specialize in weddings, but I also plan social and corporate events.

Describe your career path so far.

While at LIM, I started out by working events at retail stores and then moved onto larger-scale events like fashion shows after planning the LIM annual fashion show. From there, I got an internship working for the Major League Soccer team the New York Red Bulls. When I was a senior, I got a job working for Madison Square Garden. After graduation, I moved to Tampa and got a job at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. After two years, I moved back to Colorado, which is when I started my own event planning company. After just one year, I saw my clientele explode.

What’s been the biggest challenge in starting your own business?

Learning the operations side. I was very familiar with planning and designing events, but it's quite different to do it under your own name. From filing taxes, to doing payroll, to choosing advertising partners and getting new leads — it's a constant learning experience.

What career accomplishment are you most proud of?

Being named to The Knot's “Best of Weddings” list in the first year of my company being open is my biggest accomplishment to date. Fewer than 20 event planners in the state get named to that list and I’m proud to be one of them.

How did LIM College help prepare you for your career?

The fact that we were required to have internships throughout our time at LIM really helped me get out and gain experience for my resume. By the time I graduated, I already had 4 years of event experience under my belt.
