Director of Math Center to Conduct Study Funded by National Science Foundation

How young women develop their “mathematics identity” has long intrigued Dr. Anahu Guzman, Associate Chair of Arts & Sciences and Director of LIM College’s Math Center.

As a result of his recent participation in the Furthering Girls’ Math Identity Research-Practitioner Meeting organized by the New York Academy of the Sciences and FHI 360, Dr. Guzman has been invited to collaborate on a study funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) through FHI 360 as part of an initiative to increase girls’ participation in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education and careers.

Dr. Guzman will study the influence of the Empowering Latina Girls through Statistical Knowledge program, run by the Children’s Museum of the East End, on its participants’ math identities.

Empowering Latina Girls Through Statistical Knowledge is a 10-week after-school course in which middle school girls read culturally relevant articles, learn how to read and interpret graphs, and acquire skills to support arguments using statistics inside and outside the mathematics classroom.

Dr. Guzman’s yearlong collaboration with the program will result in a report for the NSF, a proposal to present at the National Council of Teacher of Mathematics, and an article for publication.

Last December, Dr. Guzman gave a presentation on factors that shape young women’s mathematics identities as part of the College’s Marcuse Lecture Series for faculty and staff.
