Institutional Response on Changes to the Student and Exchange Visitor Program

LIM College vehemently opposes the recent decision by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) regarding temporary exemptions to the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). These changes, which require international students to maintain in-person instruction or depart the country, will have a negative impact on many international students with F-1 visas. Further, the lack of clarity surrounding students who are not currently in the U.S. who wish to study remotely creates unnecessary hardship.

At LIM College, international students in the US will be able to comply with these new regulations by taking one or more hybrid in-person classes. The institution will work with all international students to ensure that their schedule includes this minimum requirement and they are able to maintain their visas under the new regulations.

LIM also strongly supports international students who are currently abroad and unable to return to the US. These students are encouraged to continue their studies in online or hybrid virtual formats. It is currently unclear whether these students will need to reapply for an F-1 visa. The institution will closely monitor the situation and communicate information as soon as it is available, as this visa status affects both OPT and CPT.

On the broader issues, we feel these new requirements remove international students' ability to choose their modality of instruction and make decisions around their safety and education, at a time when flexibility is paramount. This is antithetical to who we are as a college and the values we share as an inclusive global community.

We are working diligently to create a path forward to support our international student community, and we are closely monitoring all regulatory changes to ensure our international students are able to continue their studies without interruption. We are holding information sessions next week to answer international students’ specific questions about registration, visa status, and internships. LIM will do everything it can to support the international students who are a vital and important part of our community.
