International Alumni Spotlight: Drishtee Gupta (’18)
July 17, 2018
A native of India, Drishtee knew early on that New York City was the best place to develop her passion for fashion. Having benefited from LIM’s internship opportunities, Drishtee’s current job allows her to pursue a key career goal: creating eco-friendly fashion supply chains.
What’s happening in your career right now?
I am a Production Apprentice at Li & Fung. I determine components and drivers of cost variations, in addition to creating tools to streamline production processes. One of the most engaging projects I’m working on is researching various eco-friendly product components, as well as their cost, creation and impact, to substitute prevailing industry standards. My career goal is to help create a sustainable, eco-friendly supply chain management system for apparel.
What made you decide to come to New York City to study the business of fashion?
New York is the fashion capital of the world! The influence the city has on business, finance and fashion cannot be replicated anywhere else. That choice was made even before I started getting back my acceptance letters.
Why did you choose LIM specifically?
I wanted to explore the fashion industry, but I knew I wasn’t going to be designer. LIM’s unique program provides an amalgamation of fashion and business. When I was visiting colleges, LIM stood out for its friendly students and small classroom sizes, which provide a real sense of community.
How did your LIM College experience help prepare you for what you’re doing now?
LIM’s internship requirements jump-started my career by teaching me what is expected of a full-time employee. I was a Sales Intern at Vera Wang Bridal, a Product Development Intern at NYLON Magazine, a Project Management and Administrative Assistant at RARECulture, and a Product Development Coordinator at ADTN International. Without these internships, I would have had a hard time adjusting to post-college life. I learned how to prioritize and have a good work/life balance.
What advice would you give to other international students who are thinking about coming to LIM College?
Let yourself experience American culture, and take all the opportunities available at LIM to network and expand your knowledge base. The internships can be extremely beneficial for career advancement in your home country—you’ll be miles ahead of where you would have been otherwise.
