International Alumni Spotlight: Katie Kestenberg (’17)

Katie K.Katie Kestenberg moved from Melbourne, Australia, to pursue a Fashion Merchandising degree at LIM College. Getting a job at her dream company led her to stay in New York City.

What is happening in your career right now?
I am presently Viacom’s Global Corporate Social Responsibility and Corporate Communications Coordinator. My Senior Co-op internship at LIM College helped me build strong relationships in these fields and assisted me in securing this position. My focus is to help inspire positive change in our communities and engage employees who are passionate about giving back and inspiring future leaders. Brand marketing, volunteerism and pro-social campaigns play a large role in my day-to-day activities.

What career accomplishment are you most proud of so far?
I am proud to have run a successful annual youth mentoring program—in partnership with the Mayor’s Office and NYC Service—to raise the NYC public high school graduation rate.

Why did you choose to come to LIM College?
I liked that LIM dedicates students’ final semester to a full-time internship because this set me apart from other graduates and increased my chances of securing a job straight out of school. I completed five internships! Each one was different and included areas like product licensing, finance, sportswear and entertainment, all of which contributed to building a unique skillset. My final internship transitioned into my first full-time corporate job.

How did your LIM education help prepare you for your career?
LIM taught me the importance of being able to network and forced me to get comfortable as a public speaker. One of my main responsibilities is to head Viacom’s global youth mentoring programs. These programs assign Viacom mentors with students in underserved communities to build relationships that span from high school through their entry into the workforce. The public speaking class I took in my junior year prepared me for the meetings I now lead.

What was it like to be an international student at LIM?
LIM has a strong community feel. I felt comfortable seeking assistance whenever I needed it, and I knew the contact for any particular issue. These are important things to consider when moving from abroad. I left LIM having formed lifelong relationships.
