LIM College 2018 Commencement Ceremony

LIM Commencement speakersLIM College’s 79th Commencement exercises were held on May 24 at Carnegie Hall in Manhattan. More than 550 graduates make up the Class of 2018, the largest graduating class since the College was founded in 1939. They received master’s, bachelor’s and associate degrees — and this year’s Commencement included the first group of graduates in the College’s nearly 80-year history who received Bachelor of Science degrees.

Macy’s Inc.’s Executive Vice President of Licensed Businesses, Food Services and Multicultural Initiatives, Shawn R. Outler, gave the keynote address. Ms. Outler also received an honorary Doctor of Commercial Science degree and was presented with LIM College’s Distinguished Achievement Award.

In her remarks, Ms. Outler, who is a member of LIM’s Fashion Industry Advisory Board, shared four principles which she believes will help LIM College’s Class of 2018 succeed and meet the challenges ahead: be curious, live with integrity, trust your instincts, and be flexible.

She said, “Our industry is global, diverse and built upon strong relationships. Today more than ever, we need to develop meaningful connections with individuals from varied cultures, backgrounds and generations. The ability to understand, appreciated and empathize with individuals whose life experiences are different from yours is essential.”

Ms. Outler also noted, “Data and analytics play an important role in all we do. The right data allows us to target opportunities and drive action to seize them.”

Yet she then went on to cite psychologist Gerd Gigerenzer, who studied decision-makers at large international companies. Dr. Gigerenzer’s findings revealed that 50% of all decisions are “gut decisions.”

Concluded Outler, “They leveraged data and analytics to provide information and add color to decision-making, but at the end of the day, they went with their gut.”

As part of an annual tradition, representatives from previous LIM College graduating classes marched in the Commencement procession and were seated on stage. The ceremony was also streamed live online and is available for viewing at: www.limcollege.edu/commencement

In her remarks to the graduates, President Elizabeth S. Marcuse said, “As I look out among you, I see faces from all over the world. Some of you crossed multiple oceans to pursue your education, while others may have crossed the Brooklyn Bridge. Yet, no matter what kind of journey you made to get to this point, it was ignited by a common desire. The desire to follow your dreams of a career in the business of fashion.

To make those dreams a reality, and get to this day, you chose to travel a challenging path. A path that required you to push out of your comfort zone, expand your mind and horizons, and test the limits of your determination on a daily basis. And you did it...you put in the hard work required to reach your goal. That hard work is the not-so-secret ingredient that will make the dreams you started with continue to come true. Because you are now prepared. You’re leaving LIM with specific knowledge, skills and experience in the business of fashion...and regardless of the specific career path you choose, you are prepared to lead fashion, and all its related businesses, into a bright and prosperous future.”
