LIM Student Selected for Barneys New York Foundation Summer Intensive Program
June 21, 2017
The Barneys New York Foundation (BNYF) Summer Intensive is a program that gives college students the opportunity to go behind the scenes at Barneys New York and learn how the company operates. For four weeks, participants get to experience everything that makes up Barneys New York — including merchandising, marketing, human resources, legal, finance, special events, retail strategy, customer service, and sales.
LIM College student Justin Rivera (’18) is currently part of the BNYF Summer Intensive program.
According to Justin, the program consists of three to five daily meetings that are followed by a Q&A, as well as field trips to retail stores and one-on-one time with mentors.
At the end of the program each student gives a presentation about their experience. BNYF also presents each student with a small scholarship upon completion of the program, and the students can apply for a Barneys internship the following summer.
Justin says that the students in the program are from diverse backgrounds and therefore bring a lot of different viewpoints to the table.
Currently, Justin is working on developing an androgynous luxury accessories line that focuses on a rock-and-roll aesthetic and utilizes exotic leathers. As he prepares to graduate, Justin hopes to take what he has learned at LIM and at Barneys and use it to build his own brand.
He says, “My plans are to develop a social media presence that I can use as traction and then invest in product extensions. Currently, I am still in the beginning stages and perfecting my first product. My end goal would be to make it in to niche boutiques — as well as a specialty retailer like Barneys.”
