Online Graduate Student Spotlight: Jaliyah Brown

JaliyahWhat was your educational background before starting LIM’s online master’s degree program?
I’m originally from Hinesville, Georgia. For my undergraduate degree, I attended Kansas State University and majored in Apparel and Textile Marketing.

Why did you decide to get your master’s degree online rather than on campus?
My reasons were mostly financial. Before I take the leap and move to New York City, I want to be able to financially support myself. While I’m getting my degree online, I’m also saving up for the big move.

What made you choose LIM?
I chose LIM because of the online program’s flexibility and the great courses offered. Pursuing my master’s degree online has allowed me to work, enjoy relaxing days at home, and travel, all while staying committed to my education.

Where are you working now?
I currently work as a part-time sales advisor at H&M. It’s a role that gives me a unique perspective on fashion and allows me to learn more about the industry every day.

Jaliyah TownhouseWhat do you like best about LIM’s online master’s degree program?
Being miles away from your campus can be difficult when you're first adjusting to your new life as a student. But LIM’s staff is wonderful about responding to my questions, and they’ve made the transition so easy. The College also recently brought a group of online grad students (myself included!) to New York City for Destination: Fashion NYC, where we got to meet with our advisors in-person, network with the LIM community, and experience the city!

How is LIM helping you work toward your career goals?
My ultimate career goal is starting my own online thrift/vintage store and then eventually transitioning to an actual brick and mortar store. My LIM courses are teaching me what I need to manage a business, as well as providing me with networking opportunities and career guidance.

What advice would you give to someone who’s thinking about applying to an online program at LIM College?
I would highly recommend LIM to someone considering doing their degree online. The courses and professors provide you with the tools to take the next step in your career. You have the ability to balance work and school and can feel confident in knowing that there is a great staff ready to support you along the way.
