Dr. Symons is an established scholar of communication and the media industries, including his books Women Comedians in the Digital Age: Media Work and Critical Reputations After Trump (Routledge), Mel Brooks in the Cultural Industries: Survival and Prolonged Adaptation (Edinburgh University Press), and an invited chapter in Trump's Media War (Palgrave MacMillan). He regularly authors research for influential journals, including the Journal of Popular Film and Television, Celebrity Studies, the Journal of Fandom Studies, the Journal of Applied Journalism and Media Studies, and the Journal of Adaptation in Film and Performance.

He is an accomplished speaker, panel chair, journal section editor, peer reviewer, and is a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Popular Culture. He has presented regularly at the Popular Culture Association, the Film & History Conference, the University of Hartford's Distinguished Lecturer Series, and a keynote address at the Media and Celebrity Studies Conference. Previously, he presented at institutions across the UK, including the University of Nottingham, University of Salford, University of Glamorgan, Manchester Metropolitan University, and De Montfort University.
