A little girl's dream comes true
Moving to NYC was a huge dream of mine since I was young!
I actually took a few summer courses in the city when I was in high school, so I had the advantage of having explored a bit beforehand. Still, there was a lot to figure out, like learning how to navigate the subway and understanding the city's grid layout. Once I found a routine and some favorite spots, it started to feel like home.
I haven’t had to overcome much homesickness for Texas. But I do love my cowgirl boots, and they’ve become a staple of my wardrobe!
I Don’t Sweat the Snow
The weather in New York is definitely a big shift from Texas, but I’ve really enjoyed getting to experience all four seasons the way they’re supposed to be. My biggest tip would be to invest in thermal base layers for winter. Also, don’t hide inside because it’s cold! You must get out there to beat the winter blues, and there’s so much beauty in the city in winter, especially when it snows.
No driving? Nooo problema.
I’m an anxious driver, so shifting to a walking and subway lifestyle has been the perfect change. Where I’m from Texas, it takes like 20 minutes to drive anywhere interesting. In NYC, everything is so convenient, you can walk outside and find nearly anything right on the next corner.
Also, don’t be intimidated by the subway system, it seems overwhelming at first, but it quickly becomes second nature.
Politeness = Sorta Overrated
Coming from a small town where everyone already knows each other, it’s been refreshing to be in a place where there’s always someone new to connect with and learn about.
Texans tend to sugarcoat things a bit ... and the way people communicate here is VERY different. New Yorkers are kind, but not necessarily nice, if that makes sense. They tell it like it is, and I honestly appreciate how constructive it can be.
My guiltiest pleasure is actually eavesdropping, which is so easy when you're constantly around people having interesting conversations. I've heard so many stories, the good bad, and the crazy!
Oh, Did I Forget to Mention My Go-To Spots?
My favorite spots for coffee and matchas in NYC are Cha Cha Matcha, 10000 Coffee, and Kore Coffee. For dining out, I've fallen in love with sushi—my top recommendations are Katsuya and Catch (a perfect choice when I want to dress up) and Kazunori (for the best handrolls). I also love Shuka and Lola Taverna—they’re cozy places with amazing food and great vibes.
When it comes to decorating a living space, you can't beat The Grand Bazaar and Chelsea Flea Market for amazing vintage and one-of-a-kind pieces, or Clic and abc carpet & home for home decor and interior inspiration.
Advice to My Younger Self
New York City may not be as glamorous as it looks online. It’s intense, and it’s easy to burn out, but it’s also deeply rewarding. This city pushes you to achieve and helps you grow. There are little moments that make everything worth it, like going to trendy restaurants or meeting so many interesting people from different walks of life.
