Moving into FOUND? Here's Your Ultimate What-to-Bring Guide

No matter how you slice it, coming to New York City for college is an adventure!

Whether you’re flying in from the West Coast, road-tripping from Jersey, or taking the LIRR into the city, your new home at FOUND Study – Midtown East is waiting.

FOUND isn’t just a place to sleep; it’s your home base, your getting-ready runway, your late-night ramen station, and everything in between. So, let’s talk about what to pack to make your space functional, comfy, and so you.

Here’s a quick list to keep things as simple as possible, that will make your transition into LIM College's residence hall smooth and stress-free.

What’s Already in Your Room (AKA: No Need to Haul These)

FOUND makes move-in a breeze by providing a few key things, so you don’t have to cram a mini-fridge into your backseat. Here's what's already waiting for you:

  • Twin XL bed + mattress (plus two underbed drawers = extra storage goals)
  • Desk + chair (aka your study-and-scroll station)
  • Closet (bring your fashion week lineup!)
  • Microwave & fridge

(Deluxe rooms also include a kitchenette, which has a sink and electric cooktop in addition to the fridge and microwave.)

What to Definitely Bring

Here’s your essentials checklist—with a few real-life student tips, because we’ve been there:

Sleep & Comfort:

  • Twin XL bedding set – Sheets, comforter, pillows. Pro tip: go for cozy, breathable fabrics—you’ll thank yourself in September and March.
  • Mattress topper – It’s not essential, but your back will love you.
  • Phone dock/alarm clock – Or just use your phone but set at least 3 alarms. NYC may not sleep but you still need yours!

Food & Kitchen:

Even if you’re not rooming in a Deluxe, there are shared kitchens! So you’ll want:

  • Microwave-safe plates, bowls, mugs – Bonus if they’re cute and Insta-worthy
  • Basic cookware – A frying pan, spatula, and at least one good knife (yes, even if you think you won’t cook).
  • Reusable food containers – For leftovers or stashing snacks between classes.
  • A Brita or filtered water pitcher – Filtered water hits different.

Clothing & Laundry:

  • All the hangers – Seriously, more than you think you need.
  • Steamer or mini-iron – For looking crisp even after the subway ride.
  • Laundry basket or bag – Preferably something easy to carry. Laundry day is real.
  • Weather gear – Umbrella, raincoat, and waterproof boots. Trust us.

Bathroom Basics:

  • Shower caddy – Especially helpful if you’re using a shared bathroom.
  • Towels (big and small) – And at least one backup set.
  • Toiletries – Pack like you’re staying in a hotel—but don’t forget extras like cotton rounds, nail clippers, etc.
  • Toilet paper – You’d be shocked how many people forget this on Day 1.

Nice-to-Haves (But Highly Recommended)

  • Desk lamp – For those late-night study grinds (or journaling, or painting your nails).
  • UL-approved power strip – You’ll have devices, and they all need charging.
  • Storage bins or cubes – Keep snacks, shoes, and random stuff organized.
  • Adhesive wall hooks – Decorate without damage. Hang photos, string lights, or even bags.
  • Small trash can – You'll want one near your desk.

What Not to Bring

FOUND has rules, and safety comes first. Don’t pack these:

  • Halogen lights or perimeter LED strips
  • Space heaters, toasters, hot plates, convection ovens
  • Candles, incense
  • Alcohol or drugs (even if you’re 21)
  • Hoverboards, scooters
  • Pets

Final Tip: Add a Bit of You to the Room!

Make your room feel like home with:

  • Your favorite photos, posters, or a vision board you created.
  • A comfy throw blanket for movie nights
  • A mini mirror station for getting glam
  • Snacks you can’t live without (Takis, trail mix, your call)
  • A scent-free diffuser or room spray (dorm-safe and major vibes)
  • Mood lighting (Think fairy lights, desk lamps, or a salt lamp for an extra cozy feel)
  • A mini bulletin board or dry-erase calendar (to keep track of your fashion shows, classes, and internship opportunities)
  • A few go-to books or fashion mags – for inspiration (or just to look cute on a shelf)
  • A reusable water bottle that matches your aesthetic (hydration, but make it fashion)
  • A speaker for playlist-perfect mornings (just keep the volume dorm-friendly)
  • Slippers (because the bathroom floors are freezing at 8am)

You’re about to kick off your fashion school era in the heart of NYC. Make sure your space reflects your vibe!
