With its bustling streets, world-class fashion events, and renowned retailers, Aishwarya says there's no better classroom for aspiring fashion professional than New York City. As an intern at Hugo Boss, she’s taking advantage of the opportunity to do Curricular Practical Training (CPT), applying what she’s learned in her coursework to real-life workplace situations, enhancing her professional skills, and making valuable career connections.

Program: The Business of Fashion

Home city: Mumbai, India

Where are you currently interning?

I'm working as a Wholesale Intern for BOSS Men (Hugo Boss). I manage inventory and sales reports for major accounts, oversee sample allocation, and handle contract maintenance. I also participate in market appointments, prepare follow-up recaps, analyze competitive market information, and assist with showroom organization.

How does this internship relate to your master’s program of study?

I am gaining practical experience in the fashion industry that directly applies to my Business of Fashion master's program at LIM College.

I'm learning how to manage major accounts, inventory, and sales data, which are crucial aspects of fashion business management. Participating in market appointments and analyzing competitive market data provides me with insights into fashion marketing and brand positioning. Organizing the showroom exposes me to visual merchandising in the fashion industry.

All these experiences will deepen my understanding of the wholesale fashion business, enabling me to connect my theoretical learnings from the master's program to real-world applications!

How did your LIM College classes prepare you for what you are doing at your internship?

My courses have provided a solid foundation of knowledge in the business of fashion, preparing me for this internship in several ways.

My classes in business management and marketing have given me a comprehensive understanding of how to manage accounts, inventory, and sales data, which are key responsibilities in my internship.

My studies in market dynamics and brand positioning have equipped me with the analytical skills needed to participate in market appointments and evaluate competitive market data. Additionally, my coursework on retail merchandising has prepared me to contribute to showroom setup and organization.

Why is doing Curricular Practical Training (CPT) important for international students?

As an international student, CPT is vital as it bridges the gap between classroom learning and real-world practice. It has helped me enhance my professional skills, such as teamwork and problem-solving, within the context of a U.S. work environment. It has also given me valuable networking opportunities within my field of interest, potentially aiding my future career. Additionally, doing CPT has also helped me understand if a particular career path aligns with my skills and ambitions.

What is it like to go to school in New York City?

Studying in New York City, the fashion capital of the world, is a blend of living a dream and gaining an enriching education!

NYC pulses with a unique energy that keeps me inspired and motivated. Every street, every neighborhood is like a living fashion runway. This dynamic environment, combined with the city's rich culture and diversity, provides endless learning opportunities outside the classroom.

My favorite thing about being in New York is its vibrant fashion scene. I love how the city's streets are filled with diverse styles, and how the latest trends come alive not just on the runways, but in everyday life. As an aspiring fashion professional, there's no better classroom than NYC's bustling streets, world-class fashion events, and renowned retailers. The entire experience is incredibly motivating and fuels my passion for the fashion industry even more!

What are your career goals?

I'm still exploring different areas of the fashion industry. However, currently I aim to work in a buying or marketing role, ideally with luxury, sports, or athleisure brands. My goal is to leverage my academic and practical experiences to drive data-informed strategies that boost brand performance and customer engagement. Long-term, I aspire to lead a team to innovate and promote sustainable practices within the industry.
