2020 SUMMER LAB NON-CREDIT COURSES
#VISUAL: MAKING A SCENE
From a visual and creative perspective, you’ll learn how to build a small-scale branded environment for a “client” by developing color schemes, signage, and props that make an impactful display and social media presence.
BACKSTAGE PASS: PUBLICITY AND EVENT PLANNING
Go behind the scenes to learn how to plan and publicize an event of any size, from concept to completion.
BE A FASHION BUYER
Learn about being a buyer in today’s fashion world. You’ll explore NYC retail, develop a buying plan, and “buy” for a popup, store, or website!
BEHIND THE SCENES: FASHION FIELD TRIP
Experience New York City from a fashion perspective. You might visit a showroom, a corporate marketing or media office, a pop-up/retail experience or new museum exhibit. (This course requires walking and possible subway travel!)
In this workshop-style course, you’ll discover the power of branding today as you learn to become an influencer in the business while exploring the latest fashion media platforms.
BUILD YOUR BEAUTY BRAND
Explore the big business of beauty, and learn about the latest trends in color, packaging, and marketing new products. You'll create a concept and pitch presentation for a new beauty brand by the end of the week!
THE BUSINESS OF FASHION MERCHANDISING
Like to shop stores and tap social media for inspiration? Curious what the next big fashion “drop” will be? In just one week, you’ll experience shopping the market, forecasting future trends, and creating a concept collection for a brand or store.
DIGITAL DESIGN FOR FASHION
Get hands-on practice with some of the digital design tools used in today’s fashion and creative industries. You’ll also leave with a mini portfolio of your work!
Explore how shopping has transformed through clicks and apps that directly connect consumers to fashion products. You’ll also create a digital shopping platform of your own!
FASHION FOR EVERY BODY
In this wardrobing workshop, you’ll determine your figure type and see what styles complement that silhouette best. The lessons you’ll learn aren’t about finding the “perfect fit”—they’re about finding clothes you love and that love you back.
FASHION IN THE STREETS
Through this course, students will investigate how streetwear built a fervent fanbase and became a driving voice of urban youth. Students will dive into streetwear collaborations and the people behind brands. Getting a behind-the-scenes glimpse into this cutting-edge fashion world, students will reflect upon its impact on personal, professional, and larger society levels.
THE FASHION MEDIA CHALLENGE
Fascinated by the fast paced culture of fashion media? In this course, you’ll take on real-world project challenges such as creating a print ad for Vogue, planning a concept video for Instagram, and more!
FASHION ON TRIAL
The legal side of fashion is a hot topic today. In this interactive mock trial style class, you and your classmates will take turns debating an intellectual property case and learn the ins and outs of fashion law.
Study all aspects of fashion photography, including lighting, composition and balance, model casting, location scouting, and film editing, using your own digital camera. (Camera required—digital SLR preferred)
FASHION PR & EXPERIENTIAL MARKETING
Learn about the innovative ways that fashion businesses build their image and market their products through the creation of an exciting event experience.
INSIDE THE FASHION BUSINESS
Discover how the global fashion business works from the inside out! Learn how designers, merchandisers, retailers, and trend forecasters all work together to create fashionable products for target consumers.
RED CARPET READY
Do you live for the pre-award show red carpet? Here, you’ll learn how art, music, and pop culture influence celebrity fashion and costumes.
STREET ART AND GRAFFITI
In this hands-on, project-based class, you will learn about graffiti and street art and the movement’s connections to hip hop, punk rock, social media, and more! You'll also learn how these artforms are now helping to shape popular culture and political ideas.
THE STYLIST’S ROLE
Learn all about fashion styling, from editorial to live events. In this course, you’ll also get to conceptualize and stage a live photo shoot!
WHO PUT THAT THERE? PRODUCT PLACEMENT IN THE MEDIA
Why did Carrie Bradshaw wear Manolo Blahniks? Who decided that Eleven would eat Eggo waffles? Have you ever watched a movie or tv show and wondered how they came up with a specific product? Learn about the ins and outs of product placement in the media and how one small decision can change the course of history.
2020 SUMMER LAB CREDIT COURSES
EXHIBITION AND SET DESIGN
Students will learn the basic process of developing and executing a design for a pop-up shop, photo shoot set environment, or exhibition space. From inspiration to completion, and in one exciting week, students will learn the value of working in a team, brainstorming ideas and building a dynamic space.
FASHION BUYING AND RETAILING
Discover what it’s like to be a fashion merchant and “buy” for a retail business today. Through in-class workshops, comp shop field work, and store visits, you’ll learn what fashion buying is all about. At the end of the week, you’ll leave with a merchandise buying plan for a fashion business.
FASHION MEDIA: THE ART OF MAKING A MAGAZINE
What makes a great fashion magazine? The styling? The models? The photography? The layout? In this course, you’ll get the chance to take on all of these roles while producing the next issue of Static, Summer Lab’s annual fashion magazine. Students will serve as stylists, models, photographers, and editors, while producing the whole product—from concept, to execution, to publication!
FASHION MERCHANDISING AND INFLUENCER MARKETING
Building a brand and marketing products using digital influencers is big in business today. In this “fashion incubator” style course, ideas come alive. You'll identify a void in the market and then create, conceptualize, and build a presentation pitch deck for a future fashion brand & influencer collaboration.
THE FASHION SHOW AND STYLING EXPERIENCE
Fashion styling, event planning, and fashion show production are all explored in this course. in which you'll learn from industry experts. This class culminates in a live fashion show, planned by and starring YOU!
