Being a college that is focused on the business of fashion, events like this are incredibly important to the experience, allowing us to merge what we're learning in class with opportunities waiting for us in the professional world. The broad variety of companies and brands that were present at the Fair created opportunities for all participants, whether we see ourselves working in merchandising, marketing, public relations, styling, or any other areas of the fashion business.
Speaking directly with representatives from companies and learning what it's like working there was very beneficial, as introducing ourselves to these potential employers allowed us to ask whatever questions we had and learn about the different skills they're looking for. For those who are searching for their first internships or jobs, such conversations are a key starting point. Even for students who are still trying to figure out what they want to do, meeting with different companies can help them to discover roles and paths they may never have considered.
I personally had a very busy day, meeting with Giorgio Armani, Michael Kors, Depop, Solomon Page, Rick Owens, and Authentic Brands Group. I also spoke with other students about their overall experience at the Fair. They shared how helpful they found it to make great connections, both for future purposes and for present internships, while still being in college. Having access to so many employers in one place made it very easy for students to put themselves out there, ask questions, and take the next steps towards their career goals.
Even beyond the professional opportunities—which also included complimentary resume reviews and a LinkedIn headshot photo-station—the event included fun activations for students to enjoy throughout the day! Brewed Moments provided amazing gourmet coffee drinks, giving us the chance to grab a drink between employer sessions.
We also got to pick up a goodie bag filled with different products from the various brands, like Oligy. For me, this helped add excitement and made the event feel like more than just a chance to hand out resumes.
Building a career in fashion involves more than what just happens in the classroom; networking, communication, and learning how to present yourself are extremly important parts of the process. Being able to practice those skills while also meeting industry professionals helps students become more confident as they prepare for future career moves.
Whether someone attended to meet a specific company in mind or simply to see what jobs are out there, the Fair was a great chance to learn, explore, and make connections.
