The Business of Fashion

Course Description:

This three-week course introduces students to the broad scope of the business of fashion, which includes the areas of fashion merchandising and marketing, visual studies, fashion media, styling, event management, sustainability, and entrepreneurship. Taught in units, students will "learn by doing" and experience the many facets of the business, while being guided by faculty who are industry experts in each discipline. Career opportunities will also be explored in this course. (Completion of the course will earn 3 credits that will be equivalent for FASH 1110). 

*Exception: Students pursuing a BBA in the Business of Cannabis will earn 3 elective credits.

In this course, students will:

  • Identify and examine the broad scope of focuses across the business of fashion.
  • Conceptualize and create presentation materials for a fashion business portfolio.
  • Explore career opportunities in the business of fashion.

Fashion Merchandising: From Concept to Look Book

Are you interested in creating your own fashion collection? From trend forecasting to developing color palettes to planning concepts for styles, this workshop will explore the role of a fashion merchandiser.

Fashion Marketing and Public Relations

Are you interested in learning how fashion brands tell a story and create buzz? Here, students will explore marketing, storytelling and promotion by taking on the role of a fashion publicist. They'll brainstorm a fashion campaign, write a press release, and conceptualize a product launch event!

What you will learn and do:

  • Students will produce, and know how to create, a marketing and public relations proposal presentation.

 

Fashion Styling

Interested in the business of fashion styling? Working with a celebrity stylist, students will learn the roles, responsibilities and day-to-day work of a fashion stylist.

What you will learn and do:

  • Students will brainstorm and conceptualize a fashion photoshoot and editorial spread!

 

 

Digital Design for Fashion

Interested in learning how to use Adobe Creative Cloud for fashion? Students will tap into their imagination, creativity, and talent to develop industry ready product sketches, patterns, and prints.

What you will learn and do:

  • Students will create a mini portfolio of their design and work.
  • They will use fashion tech to create digital garments, rather than sewing or constructing garments.

Fashion Field Trips

Spend a week exploring New York City, the fashion capital of the world. Go behind the scenes to experience the industry through fashion field trip visits, including the NYC garment district, 5th Avenue retail, and much more!

Fashion Media+

Do you love creating and watching fashion TikToks? Do you follow fashion influencers on Instagram? Fashion Media+ is for you! Explore the many ways brands use media to connect with fashion consumers.

What you will learn and do:

  • Students can create a fashion magazine editorial, social media video campaign, or podcast/mini documentary based on their interest!

Fashion + Lifestyle Business Startup

Have ideas for a new fashion and lifestyle brand or business? Work alongside a fashion entrepreneur to explore the elements needed to get your innovative idea started.

What you will learn and do:

  • Students will create a mini business and marketing plan to attract consumers and launch a brand.

Refund/Withdrawal:

Course withdrawal and refund of course fee requests must be made in writing through email to fashionacademy@limcollege.edu. The date of the written request is considered the official date of the student’s withdrawal. A $25 processing fee will be deducted from the refund amount. All refunds are made electronically and take up to two weeks for processing. In the event LIM College cancels a course, 100% of the tuition and fees are refunded. For withdrawals made at least a week prior to the first day a course begins, 100% of the tuition is refunded, minus the $25 processing fee. For withdrawals made less than a week prior to the start of the course, 50% of the tuition refunded, minus the $25 processing fee.

There are NO refunds given after the start of class.
