Global London (3 credits): This course guides students on a tour of London’s cultural and historical venues. We will travel to major cultural sites, possibly including: The Tate Modern, Victoria and Albert Museum, West End theatrical productions, The British Museum, The British Library, The National Gallery, The National Portrait Gallery, The National Theater, and Shakespeare’s Globe. Visits and classroom discussions will emphasize London’s extraordinary cosmopolitanism and will place its cultural history in global contexts.
Critical Theories of Fashion and Culture (3 credits, Prerequisite: ENGL 1100): This is a class about ideas. Specifically, it’s about ideas on gender, race, class, labor, power, and ecology that help us understand the ways fashion creates meaning in our society. We’ll look at subcultures like punk and cosplay, as well as popular cultural movements, like 1990s hip-hop, and argue, analyze, and interpret. Our London location provides opportunities to visit some of the important cultural places in our readings, such as the Camden thrift market.
